ABOUT THE PROJECT

Between Lines investigates the complex relationships between location-based recommendation systems, everyday surveillance, and the reliance on algorithms for mundane tasks through four speculative design films.

The films were then used to elicit reactions from experts (often tech workers who work on recommender systems or with location data) about these systems to help designers understand and anticipate likely futures.

Due to the nature of the films, you can watch them on any desktop device (preferably in a dim, quiet, space).

Using design fiction and co-speculation to critically probe and foster debate about location-based recommender systems and related issues of privacy.

Between Lines is a critical design project that explores near future interactions with location-based recommendation systems. This project was completed as part of a master's thesis in interaction design by Wyatt Olson.

These videos extrapolate current trends in social and technological spaces, exploring technologically plausible (and often likely) preludes to dystopia. These videos were used as probes to co-speculate with working professionals in the technology industry in Seattle, Washington.

While crafted for audiences with higher levels of familiarity, these videos maintain their legibility for those unfamiliar with the topics.
